How To Increase Your Gas Mileage Up To 10%!

The best way to get the largest increase in your mileage is to make sure your air filter is clean. You can increase your mileage by up to 10% with just a clean air filter. A paper filter which normally comes with your car will begin to become clogged with dirt and dust in just a few thousand miles. If you live in a dry dusty climate that can happen even quicker. Typically you should change the air filter every 12,000 miles or twice a year. AMSOIL has a filter that has a specially designed synthetic media that you can use for up to 100,000 miles or 4 years. You will need to clean it at least once a year or every 25,000 miles. If you live in an area where the air is dirty or very dusty you should clean it more often.

How To Change Your Own Air Filter

Instead of letting the guy at the local Quick Lube change your air filter and charge upwards to $14.99, why don’t you become a do-it-yourselfer DIY and save some money in the process. It is really easy and it only takes a few minutes.

Park your car and set the brake, pop the hood. If the engine is hot, let the engine cool for a few minutes. It is also a good idea to be parked in the shade or inside your garage.

You’ll need a couple of tools to accomplish this task. A butter knife and a couple of screw drivers (if handy), one standard and one Phillips.

Your air filter is normally in the black plastic casing near the center of the engine (sometimes it will be off to one side especially in larger vehicles). It should be about the size of a breadbox and probably the largest non-metal assembly you see.

To open it, insert the butter knife or flat headed screwdriver in between the plastic box and the clip and pry the clip loose. Sometimes you’ll find one that has several long screws holding the top on, in which case you’ll have to remove the screws in order to get the air filter out. Get the top off and the air filter will be inside. It is usually bright yellow or orange or red (AMSOIL’s Absolute Efficiency Air Filters are light blue), the better to see the collected dirt and dust.

Take it out and check it for cleanliness. Hold it up and bend it back so the paper ridges of the filter flutter like the pages of a book so you can see inside the crevices for accumulated dust and dirt. If the colored filter media is mostly dirty in one area, you should replace the filter. If you are using AMSOIL’s Absolute Efficiency Air Filter, vacuum it out or use a low pressure air to blow from the top side (opposite the ridges).

Clean out the air filter box with your vacuum cleaner or a damp rag to pick up all the dust and debris. Install the new filter and replace the top. Seal it up and you’re done.
